From the release of their debut EP Army Life, Scottish second-wave punks the Exploited enjoyed unexpected success on the U.K. indie charts, even rising high enough on the national charts to make an appearance on the BBC’s Top of the Pops on the strength of their 1981 single “Dead Cities.” Led by feisty, mohawked frontman Walter “Wattie” Buchan, the Exploited delivered brief, unruly blasts of street and hardcore punk with themes of politics, war, and social injustice, and became one of the best-known and longest-lasting groups to emerge from that scene. This 62-track, four-disc set focuses on their early days from the band’s formation in 1980 through the release of their third LP in 1983. Included are their first three albums, Punks Not Dead (1981), Troops of Tomorrow (1982), Let’s Start a War.Said Maggie One Day (1983), and a fourth disc containing all of their singles and EPs from this period. ~ Timothy Monger
