Death metal wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Buffalo’s Cannibal Corpse, one of the most musically brutal and lyrically extreme metal acts ever. The band’s 1996 album, VILE–a landmark in the genre, as it was the first death metal album to hit the Billboard charts–gets the deluxe reissue treatment here in celebration of Metal Blade Records’ 25th anniversary. In addition to the digitally remastered original album–which, decades later, still shocks with its pummeling riffs, blast beats, scorched-earth vocals, and disgustingly gory lyrics (see “Orgasm Through Torture”)–the package also contains an 18-track live DVD and expanded liner notes.
