Description
Recorded live at the newly reopened Sydney Opera House, this massive double album captures Don Burrows in transition — after whittling his backing unit to a quartet, a move that excised piano from his arsenal, the flutist turned his music increasingly inward, exploring space and atmosphere with new intensity. Anchored by longtime guitarist George Golla, Burrows creates mellow, soft-focus jazz influenced by both American soul and Latin pop — many songs showcase long, richly nuanced solos by bassist Ed Gaston and/or drummer Alan Turnbull, culminating with a simmering soul-jazz cover of Nat Adderley’s “Sweet Emma.” ~ Jason Ankeny
